Voukefalas and Ucandoit Blue Chip, who both won their respective New Jersey Sire Stakes titles last year as freshmen, duplicated that feat as 3-year-olds, taking the $240,000 finals for 3-year-old pacers on Saturday night at the Meadowlands. In the tilt for colts and geldings, Voukefalas (Jordan Stratton) moved up on the outside and took the lead away from Laz (Yannick Gingras) nearing the 27 1/5 opening quarter. Voukefalas would then allow a two-wide Handlelikeaporsche (David Miller) to clear racing to the 55 4/5 half, but Stratton had Voukefalas out and on the move for the retake before that marker and got the top spot back entering the final bend. It was all Voukefalas from there as he roared through three-quarters in 1:23 2/5 and then sprinted home in 26 2/5 to prevail by five lengths in 1:49 4/5. Vici (Todd McCarthy) got up for second in the lane after stalling out from first-over on the final bend, and Lifes A Puzzle advanced from fifth to the third in the final panel. Lootable (Brian Sears) and Undeniablebluechip (Andy McCarthy) rounded out the top five. "I was nervous all week but I was pretty confident coming in. He does all the work, and he makes me look good," said winning trainer Michael Russo. "He's a perfect boy. He doesn't do a thing wrong. He's a little mouthy sometimes because he's a stud colt, but [he's got] very good manners, and he doesn't fight with you about anything. Literally, whatever I do he's just fine. If I put a piece of equipment on him, he takes to it right away. Anything I needed to do in the training down process, he's done every time he's been asked. Shepherding him through his steps has been very rewarding for me." "I'll give him an easy week. I'll train him next week, and then we'll ship him up to Canada [for the North America Cup]. That will be his first big test against a full field of legit top-level horses. We'll see how that goes. I'm obviously feeling great about it. This is just a really good horse, and the sky's the limit for him." A Lazarus colt bred by owner Michael Pagonas, Voukefalas is now a six-time winner from ten trips behind the gate, and he pushed his bankroll to $391,088. He returned $2.20 to win as the 1-9 favorite. ► Sign up for our FREE DRF Harness Digest Newsletter The race for the fillies saw Twin B Allure (Jack Pelling) launch to the front early on from post ten, but Ucandoit Blue Chip (Scott Zeron) went past her at the 26 3/5 quarter and then Ucandoit Blue Chip yielded to Two Pistol Annie (Tetrick) beyond that station. Two Pistol Annie went on to hit the half in 55 1/5 and the three-quarters in 1:23 4/5, but she lugged out badly in the stretch, giving Ucandoit Blue Chip ample room to rally back into command. Ucandoit Blue Chip couldn't be caught after that, as she held sway over a closing Get Answers (Gingras) to tally by a length and a quarter in 1:51 3/5. Two Pistol Annie had to settle for third, followed by Lisa Lane (Patrick Ryder) and Anna's Wish (Joe Bongiorno). "She loves to follow cover and finish, but she can also leave off the switch really good," stated victorious trainer Linda Toscano. "He planned on doing that right from the get-go tonight, and it worked out real well," said Toscano. "That was a perfect trip. That's just what we hoped for because she loves a helmet, and she knows what to do coming off a helmet. "It's fun for me because her mother was my first Breeders Crown winner, Molly Can Do It, so that's how I wound up with her. She's eligible to an awful lot. We'll have to kind of see how she comes out of it and then make decisions." Toscano trains Ucandoit Blue Chip, a Blue Chip Bloodstock Inc.-bred daughter of Keystone Velocity, for owner Bill Elliott. Ucandoit Blue Chip has compiled a record of 6-1-2 from ten lifetime tries, and she has now earned $324,993. She paid $4.20 to win as the even-money favorite.
