The New Jersey Sire Stakes season for 2-year-olds of both sexes and gaits opened on Friday evening at the Meadowlands with a single $20,000 division for each group.

The colt trot, colt pace, and filly pace were raced as non-betting events before the main card.  Four sons of Wishing Stone lined up for the colt trot to kick off the proceedings, and U Need Stones (Yannick Gingras) would win by a length in 1:59 after leading through fractions of 30 3/5, 1:00 4/5, and 1:31.  Shoshie Deo (Dewayne Minor), Brutal Storm (David Miller), and Paging Doctor Teo (Sergio Corona) rounded out the order.

U Need Stones is trained by Ron Burke for owners/breeders Burke Racing Stable LLC., Weaver Bruscemi LLC., and Larry Karr.  U Need Stones, who equaled his lifetime mark, won both of his baby races at Gaitway to prep for tonight's race.  U Need Stones is the first foal out of the SJ's Caviar mare Sequin Hanover, a half-sister to four six-figure earners.

The next contest was the filly pace, where three horses faced off, and Gingras would also take this dash, guiding Hurrikane Empress to a 1:58 score.  She moved from second to first past the 30 1/5 opening quarter, and after putting up a 1:01 1/5 half and a 1:31 4/5 three-quarters, she would sprint home in 26 1/5 to beat Hypnotic Tale (David Miller) by a neck.  Cruzinforavictory (Brett Miller) finished third.

John McDermott trains Hurrikane Empress, a filly by Hurrikane Kingcole, for owners/breeders Jonathan Klee Racing and Kuhen Racing LLC. and their partner Pegasis Investment Group.  Hurrikane Empress, who is the first foal out of the Somebeachsomewhere mare Hurrikane Schmumma, won for the first time in her second parimutuel start.

The colt pace was a match race between Hypnotic Blue Chip sons Melanie's Fran (David Miller) and Hypnotico (Scott Zeron) and the former would beat the latter by 3 1/2 lengths in 2:00 after setting a pace of 30, 1:00 1/5, and 1:31 1/5.

Melanie's Fran is trained by Kevin McDermott for owner/breeder Francis Azur.  Melanie's Fran, who was fourth and sixth in two qualifiers before his debut tonight, is the third foal out of the Jenna's Beach Boy mare Natalie ($504,461).

The filly trot was raced on the parimutuel program, and Be Bop Sally (Andrew McCarthy) led five Wishing Stone fillies across the finish line, scoring in 2:00 1/5.  She had the front through panels of 31 3/5, 1:02 4/5, and 1:32 2/5 before trotting a 27 4/5 final kicker to score by a length and three-quarters over Princess Marxxx (John Campbell).  Stone Cold Cookie (Eddie Dennis), Far From A Wish (Gingras), and Samis Rolin Stone (Minor) completed the field.

McCarthy also owns Be Bop Sally with trainer Noel Daley and Patricia Stable.  Be Bop Sally, who was bred by Deo Volente Farms LLC. and was purchased for $25,000 at the Standardbred Horse Sale, was making her first career purse start after a second and a fifth in qualifying action.  Be Bop Sally, who was the 3-5 favorite and paid $3.20 to win, is out of the Like A Prayer mare Votum Deo, a full sister to the likes of Godiva Hall ($808,008).
