Spot Play: SMILIN ELI (7th)

Race 1

(2) I LUV THE NITELIFE only won by a nose last week but really didn’t even need to win that prep race. In my eyes she won because she is simply better than this group. She’ll be tighter this week. (7) JERSEYLICIOUS gave the top choice a run for her money despite a tough trip last time. She won the Sweetheart on Hambo Day last year. (3) MS CAILA J FRA is certainly capable if on her game.

Race 2

(2) HEAVENS DOOR has plenty of maturing to do, but showed me that she has talent with her third-place elimination effort. I’m going to take a shot with her here at a price. (6) SHAKE IT CERRY might not be the favorite but could be the one to beat in here. Notice she clocked the fastest mile of this group. (3) LIFETIME PURSUIT has done everything right in her three career starts. It is hard to leave her off your tickets. (4) CEE BEE YES upset in the NJSS final and only needs to improve slightly to compete. (10) COOLER SCHOONER has talent but is stuck with an outside post.

Race 3

(6) CHECK ME OUT didn’t seem to enjoy being stuck along the pylons in the pocket. It is time to let her roll and see what she has to offer. (9) MAVEN has dominated this division thus far but caught bad luck with post nine. She is good enough to overcome the post. (3) ONE MORE GINNY surprised everyone last week at 25-1 and should be on or near the lead today. (7) PERSONAL STYLE is usually along for a share but not my cup of tea on the win end.

Race 4

This is a hard-knocking group of mares and (5) ROCKLAMATION just seems to be in the perfect post to succeed. She should either be sitting the pocket to Anndrovette or following cover from Krispy Apple. (6) ANNDROVETTE brings a gutsy effort to the track in nearly every start. She has only missed the board once in 13 starts this year. (9) CAMILLE is my sneaky longshot play in the race. She has high early speed to mix it up early and could find a seat and get into the number. (8) DROP THE BALL has a ton of talent and a quick burst of speed. I just don’t see how she’ll get into the race from post eight.

Race 5

(3) FATHER PATRICK was driven too aggressively and got nailed in his debut. Last time he took some air uncovered and wore down (1) NUNCIO. My feeling is that he is slightly better than similarly talented young colt. (4) SOUTHWIND SPIRIT looks like a nice son of Muscle Hill, but the top two are simply faster. (2) DERBY has a trifecta or superfecta chance.

Race 6

This field is about as evenly matched as they come. I’ll try Canadian import (2) TAKE MY PICTURE, who comes down sharp and should get some pace to close into. (6) LITTLE BROWN FOX is a fast horse that has been getting some tough trips on the half at Yonkers; very dangerous. (9) COCO LINDY barn has been firing on all cylinders in Canada, but is 0-for-18 down here. This gelding was huge last week. (5) CEDAR DOVE takes on mostly boys but is every bit as good as them.

Race 7 – First Hambletonian elimination

(2) SMILIN ELI missed four weeks of action with sickness and raced very well to be third last week. For me, he has been the best 3-year-old trotter so far this year and we may get a price on him in this spot. (4) HIGH BRIDGE stole the race last week and could find himself sitting close to the action this time with a chance at hitting the exacta at a price. (8) ROYALTY FOR LIFE has tons of talent but still has more to prove. I just can’t back him as the favorite. (7) E L ROCKET should be firing off the gate; chance if he improves.

Race 8 – Second Hambletonian elimination

(1) WHEELING N DEALIN has been brought along slowly but finally showed some signs of life last week. I think driver Sylvain Filion will push away a bit from the inside and look to quarter move in this spot. (7) DONTYOUFORGETIT was wiped out in the Yonkers Trot yet had the guts to keep fighting and finish fourth. This little guy has some character. (2) APERFECTYANKEE has a solid career record and is clearly in form. My only concern is a possible first-over trip. (3) YOUR SO VAIN has some trouble going a straight line. If trainer Julie Miller gets him straightened out, watch out!

Race 9 – Third Hambletonian elimination

(4) ALL LAID OUT has displayed signs of ability but has yet to get over the top. The short field should give him plenty of open road in the stretch. (6) SPIDER BLUE CHIP has impressed me the most of this field. My only question is how he will race from off the pace with plenty of speed to his inside. (1) POSSESSED FASHION has post one and speed; good combination. (5) CORKY can certainly win this and seems likely to make the final, but I just don’t have confidence in him as the chalk.

Race 10

(6) MISTER HERBIE has proven himself here in the past and was second in this race last year behind Chapter Seven. Hoof problems have limited him so far, but he finally seems to be moving past that a bit. I don’t think he is as good as (9) MARKET SHARE, but he’ll be a much better price. The latter has been awesome in every 2013 start and is a must use on every ticket. (5) UNCLE PETER could have a tactical edge on the others. He figures to be sitting the pocket behind a fast-off-the-gate Sevruga. (4) GUCCIO seems to come up with a big race every time you ignore him. Let’s not forget how talented he is. (7) SEVRUGA has high speed and owns a world record.

Race 11

I won’t go so far as to say (2) BEE A MAGICIAN can’t lose, but on paper and from what she has done visually, it is very hard to pick against this filly. (7) TO DREAM ON finally seems to be showing some signs of life in her recent starts. If the top choice regresses and she continues to improve, anything is possible. (3) CLASSIC MARTINE came up with a nice effort last time. She has the speed to stay close. (4) MISTERY WOMAN is a nice filly with a definite chance to hit the board or get more if the favorite falters. (9) HANDOVER BELLE sucks along and gets a share often enough that she is worth using in your superfectas at her 50-1 morning line.

Race 12

Hambletonian Final – The top three finishers plus the fourth-place finisher with the highest lifetime earnings from races 7, 8 and 9 return for this race.

Race 13

(6) WORD POWER is simply better than this group. This is his payday. (1) ROCKIN AMADEUS draws nicely this week and should easily be able to secure position. (9) LUCAN HANOVER has found confidence up in Canada, but he doesn’t show much early speed and drew outside. (11) JOHNY ROCK could work out a decent trip from the second tier behind a quick Rockin Amadeus.

Race 14

(1) A ROCKNROLL DANCE has found his mojo lately and you have to love the price he should offer. My main concern is a possible first-over trip in this spot, but I’m hopeful that Tetrick will figure it out. (4) BOLT THE DUER will be forwardly placed and only needs a seam in the stretch to win. (2) WARRAWEE NEEDY can be brilliant at times and merits plenty of respect. (5) GOLDEN RECEIVER battled hard and just missed last time. We know he loves it here. (7) PET ROCK is another talented older pacer in this stacked field. I wouldn’t be even slightly surprised if he won.

Race 15

(5) BETTORS EDGE seems to have found himself at Harrah’s Philly and is more than capable of winning this tough Meadowlands Grandstand finale race. (2) VERSADO looks for his fourth win in eight starts here this year. (7) DAPPER DUDE has a nice foundation under him now and could be ready to pull off an upset. (8) FRED AND GINGER gets plenty of class relief; hard to toss.
