Best Bet: JOHNY ROCK (2nd)

Spot Play: MAJOR BOMBAY (3rd)

Race 1

(1) MINDSET was driven out a bit last week to prepare for his debut. This American Ideal colt seems to have some ability and only has a couple of serious foes to contend with tonight. (6) SIR MICHIGAN Z TAM was only a neck behind the top choice in that last qualifier and he came home in 25 3/5! My only concern is he might be looking for an easy mile in his career debut. (4) ALWAYS THERE is clearly improving.

Race 2

(1) JOHNY ROCK was exactly perfect in his qualifier, but he did finish up very willingly behind Breeders Crown winner Rockin Amadeus. I have to give him the clear edge. (4) JOHNS POLYVIEW has more seasoning this year than the top choice, but might be a step behind on talent. (1A) DUEL IN THE SUN kicked home in 26 seconds while chasing Captaintreacherous. His 2012 record speaks volumes about his ability.

Race 3

(1) MAJOR BOMBAY chased Golden Receiver around the track in a 1:50 mile last week. That should have him plenty tight in his 4-year-old debut. (7) WE WILL SEE lucks into a sweet spot after winning $432k last year and north of $1 million the previous season. The only question is whether he is cranked up and ready to go in his first start of the year. (5) CAMAES FELLOW is a recent edition to the Burke barn.

Race 4

(5) PRONOLOGY Z TAM added Lasix and knocked more than 4 seconds off from his previous qualifier. In a race with no standouts, I’ll roll the dice. (6) EMERITUS MAXIMUS tried out for the Breeders Crown last year, so obviously there is talent here; qualifier was okay. (3) RALBAR raced well in his first start of the year and could show more now. (1) ARTACUS picked up his game last time.

Race 5

(4) ANDY BARAN posted his best effort in a while last time and now adds a top catch-driver. (3) PRINCE SHARKA drops a notch. Other than his recent effort, he hasn’t raced as badly as it appears on paper. (8) COME ON RIDGE put in a big mile last time. (6) BUCKEYE IN CHARGE has been consistent.

Race 6

(8) UNCLE PETER has a couple of starts under his belt now and should be ready for a peak effort; driver change to Miller is a plus. (1) GUCCIO could be the best trotter in training right now when all is said and done; one to beat. (3) GOOGOO GAAGAA qualified back well enough. He did set a world record last year; respect.

Race 7

(7) TOUCH AND GO drops in class this week and gets a new set of hands in Tetrick at the controls. Sometimes all it takes is a new driver to wake one up. (3) FANTADDY is another getting class relief; Callahan’s choice. (5) CORKY BARAN has found his class and form lately; tougher spot.

Race 8

(1) WESTERN TRADEMARK returns off a braven-up mile at Vernon. He remains at his usual C-1 level but arguably finds the softest spot he has seen in a while. (8) THE VILLAGE RUSTY ships up from Dover with fine early speed and should get a piece. (2) ROLLWITHITHARRY seems to be going well now and only needs a smooth trip.

Race 9

(3) SOURCE OF PRIDE won at first asking and lured Miller off another top 3yo prospect in (4) MARTINI HANOVER, who qualified very well and posted some fast miles last year. (2) AXIOM HANOVER clearly has ability but faces some top colts this week.

Race 10

(2) ARTS JIMMY RAY showed some life at this level recently. Gelding has some early speed and that should serve him well in this dull group. (10) STORMIN RUSTLER is another with early zip that should be hustled away early. (5) BOBJACKS ANGLE A looks like a player on the drop in class; needs pace help.

Race 11

(5) HILLBILLY HANOVER has a start under his belt now and should be ready to roll on the engine. (2) IDEAL CHAMP is clearly not as good as some of these, but I have a feeling others might be looking at a easy mile in their 4-year-old debuts. (3) HURRIKANE KINGCOLE was purposely reserved in his last qualifier and figures to be handled as patiently as he’ll allow.

Race 12

(3) ROCINANTE was clearly short after taking almost a month off. Now he drops down and adds Gingras; lots to like. (2) WISHER has had trouble in the claiming ranks. This spot seems easier. (8) DEVILS EMBRACE N comes off a good effort and should be leaving again.

Race 13

(1) KISS MY ART drops down for this series after a couple of bad luck trips. I’m sure he’ll be aggressive in this spot. (5) STIRLING BRIGADE was used hard last time and only lost by 4 ½ lengths. (9) RELENTLESS DREAMER was over his head in the Hudson River series but seemed to race a bit better. (2) FREDDY DAY HANOVER should feel at home against this group.
