Spot Play: BALLINROBE (10th)

Race 1

(2) BET YOU is a potential stakes caliber 3-year-old making his seasonal debut. Jimmy Takter trainee qualified back willingly and has a big post edge on some of the other contenders. (6) ART HISTORY raced a bit better than I expected last time, but this barn has been sending out winner all meet; respect. (8) JENERAL PATTON faced some salty competition in his lone qualifier and kept up nicely. I don’t know if he is ready and the post is far from ideal, but this guy has ability. (1) MY NAME IS SAM has been very consistent throughout his career. (9) BETTING EXCHANGE qualified very well but draws a tough assignment from post 10.

Race 2

In a race that will be simulcast from Tioga as part of a special pick four wager, (3) MY MUSCLEMAN ironically ships in from the Big M off a fine post 10 effort and should prove tough. (1) FOX VALLEY STEFFEN has been stuck with outside posts at Pocono and now gets an inside draw. He is clearly a wake-up candidate. (8) JAIPUR is capable at this level but would need to fire off the gate and hope the trip works out.

Race 3

(4) JULERICA sprinted home in his most recent qualifier and Smedshammer calls on a catch-driver to steer with money on the line. (5) TOUCH OF LUCK was in deep versus stiff competition in the Spring Preview. This spot is much easier. (6) WESTERN PIONEER qualified back in good order with a nice speed-tightening mile. (1) MOHAWK WARRIOR arrives from Miami Valley off a win for new connections.

Race 4

In the second and final Tioga simulcast, (3) FOLLOW MY DREAMS is getting some serious class relief for a high percentage barn. (9) COMMENTARY hasn’t raced in a few weeks, but that 1:59 4/5 mile at Freehold last time projects nicely to a winning time here. (1) ALLSTAR SURVIVOR should enjoy the drop out of claiming company.

Race 5

(4) CAPOZZO took care of business versus lesser with a big mile last time; again. (5) MISTER VIRGIN scored at first asking for his new barn and remains at the same level. (6) LONG LIVE ROCK comes off a toss-out mile at Freehold. This guy is more than capable with the right trip.

Race 6

(4) WIGGLE IT JIGGLEIT remains perfect in six career starts and qualified back convincingly. Projected as one of the top 3-year-old pacers in the country, this is not his main goal, but he should win anyway. (1) ROCK N’ ROLL WORLD figures to sit close to the top one and pick up the pieces. (5) FAST MOVIN TRAIN usually shows speed but could have trouble if the favorite leaves hard to his inside.

Race 7

(8) NF DRUM ROLL doesn’t inspire me with tons of confidence, but against this weak field he should roll down the road. (2) ABSOLUTELY MICHAEL improved with Berry in the bike and should flash speed in this spot. (4) TOWER POWER hails from a barn with 11 wins on the meet. The rest of the trainers in here combine for three wins.

Race 8

(8) ACELO HANOVER moves into a barn that is winning over 50% of its races during the meet. Gelding has high speed and should take them as far as he can on the engine. (3) HRUBYS N LUCK drops down to his comfort level. (2) NORTHERN PRIZE comes off consecutive second-place finishes at this level. With only 2 wins in his last 45 starts and a 7% career win record, I can’t endorse him on top.

Race 9

(4) DOCTOR BUTCH is in a good spot where he can take charge at the onset and sit no worse than second. (5) DOO WOP HANOVER was super last week and could be a force in his first season versus older foes. (6) DOVUTO HANOVER is a live cover trip away from a victory.

Race 10

(3) BALLINROBE had some traffic trouble last time. Wayne Givens-trained gelding drops in class and gets David Miller in the bike this week. (6) YOU BET YOUR GLASS gunned down the road a week ago. Now he is up one level and switches barns; still a threat. (9) MAMBO ITALIANO is another one getting a change of scenery. He’s been sharp lately.

Race 11

(2) BETTOREVER just missed from a tough spot last Saturday. He’ll be much closer to the action this time around and could be the one to beat. (6) REDISCOVERY bested the top choice by a neck last time and gets a positive driver switch to Gingras; must use. (7) IDEAL COWBOY should perk up greatly with the switch to Tetrick; using.

Race 12

(7) BLATANTLY BEST was facing a much better group last Saturday. All he needs is a reasonable pace to set up his late rally. (5) SPEED AGAIN will be headed to the front and could score in back-to-back weeks if left alone. (2) WINDSONG GORGEOUS returned to form last time; chance. (6) ELLIS PARK qualified back well. Six-year-old has the talent to win.

Race 13

(1) CAJUN HOT SHOT and (2) ROCKAHOLIC have the most form, the best early speed and inside posts. One of the two should win. (7) WESTERN TSUNAMI ships in for a good barn and has the best shot at upsetting.

Race 14

(7) COBALT MAN gets a better post to work with and Tetrick in the bike. (8) INTREPID HALL comes off a string of races where he has no shot from outside posts. (6) GRATIAS DEO has plenty of form and won both his starts the last time he was in this barn. (10) REGAL BABE drops out of series action and would figure to wake up. (5) STORMIN RUSTLER has been racing okay lately and now gets a nice driver change.
