MEET STATS: 95 - 357 / $578.00   BEST BETS: 13 - 29 / $40.90

Best Bet: SKY MCFLY (13th)

Spot Play: A PLACE IN HISTORY (1st)

Race 1

(5) A PLACE IN HISTORY had absolutely no chance of closing from last on a very slow track at Pocono last time. His prior start was a decent effort at this level despite missing three months of action. (6) STALLONE BLUE CHIP had a tough trip last time. I expect Campbell will get him a smoother trip; very dangerous. (9) ROCK THE WIND drops down and merits a look.

Race 2

(3) BEST SAID has looked pretty good in morning action and might be ready to score at first asking. (8) PIERCE is clearly the one to beat on paper but remains winless in 16 career starts. (7) PEMBROKE SCORPIO raced well in his first start since August.

Race 3

(4) ARI’S TURN certainly showed he is fast enough by winning at the Red Mile last year. Three-year-old makes his 2014 debut and seems worth a shot at a price. (8) MR BIG LOAD is coming into his own and is off a strong mile. (9) SENTOSA ISLAND hasn’t been able to put it all together yet, but I believe there is some ability within. (3) WICKED BUSINESS is worth a look on the track.

Race 4

(1) P H POWERPLAY dropped to this level last time and was the victim of an outside post. From the inside he should be able to wait for the dust to settle and make one winning move. (2) THAT’S JUSTICE has been very consistent but can’t get over the top; using. (3) ROCKNROLL JEWEL drops down to the C-2 condition and merits serious consideration.

Race 5

(1) CAM B ZIPPER raced fairly well from post 10 last time. This field lacks a clear standout horse and this gelding should have every chance to take charge. (6) STORMIN RUSTLER should flash speed in this spot and be involved. (2) HACIENDA upset in the Winter Survivor final then got stuck with post 10 most recently; longshot player.

Race 6

(1) WAKE UP PETER tried to close from virtually last in the Clyde Hirt final and did a good job to grab third. There are no excuses this week from post one. (8) ALEXAS JACKPOT has been racing well every week. Only question revolves around trip for this early-speed-deficient 4-year-old. (7) RIVER RUN RYAN gets his nose back on the gate this week after a second tier start last time. (4) IMA GIGGITY FOOL could be firing out; exotics must.

Race 7

(6) CAPTIVE AUDIENCE impressed with a solid effort right off the bench. Talented 4-year-old is simply faster than most of these when on his game. (2) PRAIRIE JAGUAR need to find his ‘A’ game away from Pompano Park. If he takes to the track, watch out! (5) SUMMER SMACKDOWN blew up early and often last week. I would take a shot here at 20-1.

Race 8

(10) BIG ART drops down to the basement condition to face C-2 types. In his last try at this level, he wired the field. I don’t see post 10 as a large impediment against this lackluster group. (5) SHARK ON BOARD ships back in and finds a sweet spot. (3) WILLY MUCHA doesn’t look enticing on paper but should be competitive.

Race 9

(2) WINDSONGS GORGEOUS comes off a layoff and a scratched-lame line, but that doesn’t concern me with this guy. He should be sitting very close to the action and be ready for a sharp effort. (3) CANE RIDGE is plenty fast off the gate and should be cutting the fractions. (6) PAPPYS PAL qualified very well and finished under a snug hold. I’m not sure I love this spot for him, but if the price is right, I’ll be using him.

Race 10

At first I was concerned that (8) SEEK THE DRAGON would have trouble getting into the race from the outside post, but if you dig deep enough into his PP lines, he has early speed and tends to perform well when he uses it. This is a winning spot. (1) STEUBEN PATRIOT took plenty of air in his first start since October. Four-year-old is eligible to improve. (4) HIGHLAND TERRIFIC won his last start at the C-2 condition and should offer a price on Saturday.

Race 11

There is no shortage of contenders in this C-1 Final. I have to hitch my wagon to a longshot and hope for the right trip. (7) BETTOR B needs a fast pace but he just might get it with horses that usually race for $10 to $15k going for $30k on Saturday. I’ll take the 30-1 and hope it works out. (2) VALENTINO has speed, plenty of back class and comes with a capable pari-mutuel entry partner; lots to like. (8) QUIK MAGIC is probably the horse to beat, but post 10 is likely to present some issues. (1) VERDAD rallied nicely in his first start since December. (4) MIGHTY YOUNG JOE is certainly sharp now.

Race 12

(4) FRANKIES DRAGON has been racing very well. O’Sullivan trainee finds the perfect spot to show early speed. (6) BLATANTLY BEST is in fine form. (7) DYNAMIC YOUTH is the fastest horse but his qualifiers haven’t screamed that he is ready.

Race 13

(6) SKY MCFLY has picked up his game for trainer Ron Burke and looks like the clear favorite. (7) THE POKESTER ships in from Yonkers. Gelding posted a lifetime mark here in 2013. (10) ATLAS ALLIANCE N is in good form and should be along for a decent share.
