Meadowlands: Mach It So rides live trip to upset win

Tim Tetrick secures the win with Mach It So.

Mach It So, a 17-1 outsider, managed to follow perfect cover and surprised the field in the $430,600 William R. Haughton Memorial for aged pacers Saturday night at the Meadowlands in 1:48 1/5. The 5-year-old came into the event with but one victory in 11 starts but that didn’t stop driver Tim Tetrick from driving him like a contender.

The race opened with Luck Be Withyou jetting from the far outside with Brian Sears and Lyonssomewhere moving from the inside. Luck Be Withyou secured the front in a :25 4/5 opening panel for Brian Sears and that driver was looking for company while cutting the half in :54.

Tetrick moved to the outside with Mach It So and fished Dancin Yankee’s cover past the half. Sears and Luck Be Withyou managed to keep the pace honest cutting a :27 4/5 third quarter and setting up the stretch sprint.

Mach It So rallied sharply when sent wide rolling by the leader and managed to hold on late with State Treasurer finishing powerfully and the ageless Foiled Again charging late for third.

Trained by Jeff Bamond Jr. for his dad’s stable Mach It So won for the 21st time in his career.

“He got me right up where I needed to be,” said Tetrick of the cover journey provided by Dancin Yankee. “When he trips out he’s as good as any.”

Race favorite Doo Wop Hanover finished eighth while never a serious factor.
