Meadow Vespers tops Wolverine

Meadow Vespers will try to win his third straight race when he faces 10 Michigan-bred colts and geldings in the $50,000 Wolverine Stakes at six furlongs.

The Richard Rettele-trained Meadow Vespers has started just once this year, winning an optional claimer by two lengths on June 6 at six furlongs. He had to come six wide on the turn to circle the field, which included three of his Wolverine rivals. Regular rider Ivan Gonzalez, who has been along for two of Meadow Vespers's four Michigan Sire Stakes wins, gets the call on the 7-year-old.

Meadow Vespers, who has been out of the money only three times in 29 career starts, is 2-1-2 in 5 starts at Pinnacle.

Bipolar Express, last year's 3-year-old Sire Stakes winner, is one of three runners from the Gerald Bennett barn. He was recently a close third in an optional claimer on the Mountaineer turf.

Robert Gorham also has three Wolverine entrants. He has entered Weatherstorm, winner of the 2007 Wolverine; Bishop Casey; and Juggle, who is 2 for 2 at the meet, including the $50,000 Lansing Stakes.
