Maysville Slew tries sprint

Maysville Slew cuts back in distance Sunday for the $35,000 Brother Brown at Remington Park. A five-furlong turf race, the Brother Brown could serve as his springboard to the Grade 3, $150,000 River City at 1 1/8 miles on turf at Churchill Downs on Nov. 16.

There are 10 others in the Brother Brown, including top contenders Jeb's Honor, April's Lucky Boy, Abbi's Choice, and Caro's Royalty.

Maysville Slew, a four-time winner on turf, has spent much of his career routing. His last two wins came in two-turn races at Arapahoe Park, and in his most recent start, Sept. 21, he finished 10th over a yielding turf course in the $100,000 Louisiana Downs Handicap, a 1 1/16-mile race run.

On Sept. 1, Maysville Slew was second in the $125,000 DeBartolo Memorial at 1 1/8 miles at Remington Park.

"Most people think he can only run long, but this horse can still sprint," said C.R. Trout, who owns and trains Maysville Slew, a son of Slew City Slew.

Trout said he wants Maysville Slew, a 7-year-old, to earn $1 million. So far, Maysville Slew has won 14 races and $835,869.

Greg Schaefer will ride Maysville Slew on Sunday.
