Maysville Slew on top in La. Downs 'Cap

Email

BOSSIER CITY, La. - Maysville Slew avenged his nose loss in last year's $100,000 Louisiana Downs Handicap by scoring a nose win over highweight Northcote Road in this year's renewal of the 1 1/16-mile turf race. It was 1 1/2 lengths back in third to Inkatha.

Maysville Slew ($18) had just a few horses beat at the top of the stretch in the Louisiana Downs Handicap, but closed outside of rivals to edge Northcote Road. Jockey E.J. Perrodin picked up the mount on Maysville Slew for Cliff Berry, who was sick and unable to ride. The winner covered the distance over a course rated yielding in a time of 1:44.47.

Maysville Slew earned $60,000 for the win, which improved his career record to nine wins from 28 starts for earnings of $532,250. He races for R.L. Sanford and is trained by C.R. Trout. Maysville Slew's next major objective is to defend his title in the $100,000 Remington Park Green Handicap at Remington Park in Oklahoma City.
