SAN MATEO, Calif. - Mavoreen ($11.60), claimed for $16,000 on Nov. 14, outfinished Lucky Sabre in the lane to win the $60,900 by a head at Bay Meadows on Sunday.

Mavoreen sat behind pacesetter Ran For The Dough and Lucky Sabre in the early going. Lucky Sabre, the odds-on 7-to-10 favorite, took over in the lane, but Mavoreen ran gamely through the stretch to win the 1 1/16-mile race in 1:42.37.

"My filly showed more speed than I thought she would," winning jockey Ron Warren said. "I just tracked Russell (Baze aboard Lucky Sabre). I knew he was on the filly to beat, and I didn't want to let him get too far way. The way she was handling the track, I knew she was going to be tough. It was close, but she got the job done."

Baze had no excuses.

"I had a beautiful trip," he said. "It went just the way I wanted. We just weren't good enough."

Winning trainer Chuck Peery said the filly has grown since she was claimed but has always been good mentally.

"Today she looked like she wanted to win," he said. "Today she sat closer and had a little more run on her mind."

Mavoreen has now won five of 15 starts. She earned $33,450 for the victory boosting her lifetime earnings to $104,510, $82,555 since the claim.
