Maryland Million gets 117 entries


Saturday's 12-race Maryland Million card at Laurel Park attracted a total of 117 horses when entries were taken on Wednesday, including Cherokee's Boy, the headliner in the featured eight-horse Classic.

Cherokee's Boy, a 6-year-old, is scheduled to make his final start in the $250,000 Classic at 1 3/16 miles before retiring to stud at the Maryland Stallion Station. In his 2-year-old campaign, Cherokee's Boy won the Nursery Stakes on the Maryland Million card, and has gone on to win $1,170,446, 13th on the all-time career earnings list for Maryland-bred horses.

The 12 races on the Maryland Million card, which offer total purses of $1,480,000, are open to horses sired by Maryland stallions. This year's edition will be the 21st running of the event.

In other races on the card, the $150,000 Turf, run at 1 1/8 miles, attracted 14 runners; the $150,000 Distaff attracted six fillies or mares, including Yolanda B. Too; the $150,000 Ladies, to be run on the turf, attracted eight horses; the $150,000 Sprint attracted six horses; and the $150,000 Oaks attracted 11 horses.

Also scheduled to be run are two $125,000 races for 2-year-olds, the Nursery Stakes and Lassie Stakes, and the $100,000 Turf Sprint. Three starter handicaps fill out the card.
