Martin gets win 3,000

Jockey Eddie Martin Jr. recorded his 3,000th career victory on Friday, rallying longshot Sweetiewheatie ($26) from last to win the seventh race at Aqueduct by a head.

Martin, who began riding in 1980, had gone winless with 34 consecutive mounts since recording his 2,999th career victory on Nov. 25.

"No frustrations at all," Martin, 43, said. "It was just a matter of time. I'm just honored to be here in New York."

Martin spent the majority of his career riding in the Midwest and South, winning riding titles at Fair Grounds, Jefferson Downs, Beulah Park, and Lone Star Park. He moved his tack to New York for this winter after his New Orleans home was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.
