Marquis handle numbers mixed

Marquis Downs wound up its 30-day meeting on Sunday with a total live handle of $882,440 and a daily average of $29,415. The respective totals for last year's 29-day meeting were $868,657 and $29,954, meaning the total went up 1.5 percent, while the daily average dropped 1.7 percent.

Marquis Downs, located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, does not export its signal, and the totals derive from ontrack handle only. The average field size was 8.2 horses per race, and a total of $1,030,000 in purse money was distributed.

On the racetrack, Neville Stephenson was the leading rider with 46 wins, with Niam Samaroo close behind with 44 and Sheldon Rodrigo rounding out the top three with 39.

Russell Gardipy repeated as the leading trainer with 25 wins. Wendy Anderson was the runner-up with 20 wins and Don Bjarnason third with 16.

Redbird Farm and Gabriel Road Stable tied as the leading owner in races won with 16. Anderson was third with 13 victories.

Avenging Cat, who captured last Saturday's Graceful Klinchit, was undefeated at the meeting and the only five-time winner.

Tease the Tiger, an Alberta invader, captured the $25,000 Saskatchewan Derby on closing day, and Cora's Act took the $25,000 Prairie Lily.
