Market Force set for big race

Market Force could be coming up to a big effort in the feature race at Northlands Park on Wednesday night. The $30,000 claiming race for 3-year-olds and up going six furlongs drew 10 horses and goes as the seventh race.

Trained by Greg Tracy, Market Force is coming off of a fourth-place finish in a $40,000 optional claiming race May 24. Don't let the claiming option fool you. The race also carried classified allowance conditions, and the field included some the top older horses at Northlands. The winner, Tanika, is the best filly or mare in the province. Inuit Fisher, who finished third, was the champion sprinter in Alberta in 2008. The drop into a $30,000 claiming race is considerable.

Market Force is making his third start of the year. Considering he missed all of 2008, he could be ready for a peak performance.

It is a competitive field, however. Hurricane Tiki is a stakes winner with $136,799 in earnings and he will be running in a claiming race for the first time in his 18-race career. He ran without blinkers for the first time when he finished eighth in the $49,000 Sales Stakes on May 23. Trainer Dale Saunders will put blinkers back on for this race.
