Mark One wins Eclipse 'Cap

Mark One stalked the pace under regular rider Robert Landry and rallied up the inside to prevail by 2 1/2 lengths and become a stakes winner in Monday's $163,350 Eclipse Handicap at Woodbine.

The 1 1/16-mile Eclipse, a Grade 3 race for 4-year-olds and upward, was a virtual rerun of its May 2 allowance prep, in which Mark One chased front-running Open Concert and rallied to win by a neck on a sloppy surface.

"My horse wasn't really on the bridle early," said Landry, "but he was on the bridle when it counted."

Open Concert set the pace again Monday in the slop, going in 24.04 seconds, 47.91, 1:12.30, and 1:39.47 but had to settle for second, 4 1/2 lengths ahead of the third-place finisher, Rock Again.

One for Rose, Canada's champion older filly or mare of 2003, was fourth, beaten a total of 7 3/4 lengths as the 3-2 favorite while making her seasonal bow and facing males for the first time.

Indy Lead trailed throughout in the five-horse field. No Comprende and Hydrogen were scratched.

A 5-year-old gelding owned by Stronach Stable and trained by Danny Vella, Mark One has now won 7 of 23 races, finishing in the money 14 times and earning $503,359. Mark One, timed in 1:46.70, paid $9.20 as the third choice and keyed an exactor worth $22.30 with 8-5 second favorite Open Concert.
