Malitzin goes last to first at Calder

Malitzin recovered from trouble after the break to register a last-to-first, three-quarter-length victory over the 85-1 shot Glotona in the $55,000 Noble Robyn Stakes at Calder.

Malitzin, a 3-year-old daughter of Dynaformer, bumped with and then had to check over the heels of Alpha Charmer shortly after the start of the 1 1/16-mile Noble Robyn, which was decided over a yielding turf course. Malitzin trailed for the opening half-mile, unleashed a steady bid leaving the backstretch, then ran down Glotona in the final strides.

Glotona steadied in traffic on the far turn, then gained the lead at midstretch but could not fend off the winner. Ashley River finished a tiring third.

Alpha Charmer steadied repeatedly from the three-eighths to the quarter pole to lose all chance, while 5-2 favorite Mysterious Jule had no excuse.

Malitzin was ridden to victory by Ariel Smith for leading trainer Kirk Ziadie and paid $9.20.
