Malibu Moon produces big numbers at Midlantic sale

Malibu Moon started his stud career at Country Life Farm before being “called up” to his owner’s Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky. But it’s safe to say he’s still thought of fondly in his adopted “home” state.

Malibu Moon sired nine horses sold for a total of $1,177,000, a strong average of $130,778, at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic juvenile sale. His group was led by a $500,000 filly sold to bloodstock agent Steven Young, on behalf of Oussama Aboughazale’s Sumaya US Stables. She was consigned by de Meric Sales, as agent.

“She sold herself every time I went and saw her,” Young said of the purchase. “She is a very good-mechanic filly. She looks like she’ll be early, and we’re very happy to get her.”

Malibu Moon also sired a $275,000 colt sold to Hillwood Stable, and a $200,000 filly sold to trainer George Weaver, as agent.

Although Malibu Moon is the sire of Kentucky Derby winner Orb and champion juvenile Declan’s Moon -- the latter a Maryland-bred graduate of the Fasig Midlantic fall yearling sale -- he is best known for his many, many outstanding fillies, including Grade 1 winners Life At Ten, Devil May Care, Malibu Prayer, Malibu Mint, Ask the Moon, Eden’s Moon, and Funny Moon.
