Major Success captures Palos Verdes

Major Success (center) wins his first stakes in Saturday's $150,000 Palos Verdes Handicap at Santa Anita.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Major Success scored his third consecutive win, and first in a stakes, in Saturday's $150,000 at Santa Anita, but had to rally between two determined rivals to reach the milestone.

Ridden by Tyler Baze, Major Success ($8) ran six furlongs in 1:09.23, winning by a neck. Jet West, who rallied wide in the stretch to challenge for the lead, finished second, a head in front of Attila's Storm, who raced on the rail throughout. The three were within a length of each other through the final furlong.

Major Success was second or third for the first half-mile, following pacesetter Papa to Kinzie through an early quarter-mile of 21.66 seconds. Attila's Storm took the lead on the turn, through a half-mile in 44.47 seconds, but was quickly threatened by Major Success and Jet West.

A 5-year-old, Major Success races for Ed Gann and trainer Bobby Frankel. Major Success won two allowance races during the Hollywood Park fall meeting and has won 5 of 9 starts and $208,700.

Frankel said Major Success may return in the $150,000 San Carlos Handicap over seven furlongs on Feb. 18.
