Majestic Stream has two stakes options at Zia

Majestic Stream, a 3-year-old who has won all three of his starts this meet at Zia Park, has been cross-entered in both the $150,000 Zia Park Derby on Saturday and the $150,000 Zia Park Distance Championship Handicap for 3-year-olds and up on Sunday.

The races will be run during the track's closing week of racing.

Clyde Veltmann, who owns and trains Majestic Stream, was debating his choices on Wednesday. He drew post 6 for the derby, and post 2 for the Distance. Majestic Stream has used front-running tactics to win his last three starts by a total of more than 15 lengths.

"I like my post position better in the Distance Championship, and I know my competition better there," said Veltmann. "And my horse, in the past, has run real well against the older horses. I guess kind of I'm leaning that way, but I probably won't make a final decision until Friday."

Majestic Stream defeated older horses last out, when he romped by 9 1/4 lengths in the $66,000 Veterans on Nov. 11. He also beat his elders in the $40,000 Ruidoso Mile in August.

Majestic Stream's rivals in the derby include More Than Regal, winner of the $250,000 Iowa Derby. His foes in the championship include Mr. Trieste, a multiple stakes winner of $558,710. In either race, Majestic Stream will be ridden by Chris Zamora.

"I just hope I make the right decision," said Veltmann. "I guess we'll know after this weekend's over."

Veltmann said that after the Zia meet he plans to base Majestic Stream, a Louisiana-bred out of the stakes-winning mare Bejoyfulandrejoyce, at Fair Grounds in New Orleans.
