Mail Call by neck in Tejano Run

Mail Call gave trainer Gary Montgomery the first stakes victory of his career when he drove to a neck victory over Deferred Comp in the $50,000 Tejano Run Stakes, the 1 1/8-mile feature on Saturday at Turfway Park in Florence, Ky.

Mail Call, ridden by Rafael Bejarano, is owned by Montgomery's parents, Sara and Glenn. After settling well behind early leader and 3-5 favorite, Horrible Evening, Mail Call moved up steadily until he collared Deferred Comp at the head of the stretch. The two dueled to the wire, with Mail Call edging clear in the final yards. Hail to Wild Again, a 41-1 shot, rallied to finish third, while Horrible Evening faded to fourth. The winner paid $9.60 as third choice in a field of six older horses.

Gary Montgomery was an assistant under Paul McGee and Ken McPeek before going out on his own several years ago.

Mail Call, a 5-year-old by Latin American, now has won five of 24 starts. All of his wins have come at Turfway.
