Mahaty Jo should capitalize on class drop

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Trainer Cindy Krasner, who won two stakes races on B.C. Cup Day, is hoping her success continues when she sends out Mahaty Jo in a second-level allowance race at Hastings on Friday. The 1 1/16-mile feature for 3-year-old fillies attracted seven horses. There is also a $75,000 claiming option, and Mahaty Jo has been entered for the full price.

Mahaty Jo is coming off a third-place finish behind heavily favored Remarkable Miss in the 1o1/16-mile B.C. Cup Dogwood Stakes on Aug. 4. With Kevin Radke aboard, Mahaty Jo made a strong move to reach contention at the top of the stretch, then didn't match strides with Remarkable Miss, who drew off to an easy four-length win over Infinite Wealth. It was the first time Mahaty Jo had raced around three turns, and she figures to take a big step forward in her second attempt at a middle distance. She is also going to appreciate the much easier company.

Mahaty Jo will be ridden by her regular rider, Frank Fuentes. Not surprisingly, Fuentes got off Mahaty Jo to ride Remarkable Miss in the Dogwood.

Diamond Berries is taking a big jump up in class after just missing in a nonwinners-of-two $20,000 claiming race open to colts and geldings on Aug. 3. She was claimed out of the race, and her new trainer, Barb Heads, wins at a 17 percent clip with first-off-a-claim runners.
