Magna pick five pays $8,574


The $2 Magna 5, a bet linking five races from four racetracks in a little more than an hour, returned $8,574.40 to 52 ticket-holders on Saturday.

The pick five attracted handle of $571,628, well above the $500,000 figure guaranteed by Magna Entertainment, the parent company of the racetracks involved.

Three of Saturday's five races were stakes. The winners were Bear Fan ($4.20) in the Barbara Fritchie Handicap at Laurel, Limehouse ($10.40) in the Hutcheson Stakes at Gulfstream Park, Trieste's Honor ($3.60) in a maiden race at Golden Gate Fields, Razik ($47) in a claiming race for sprinters at Santa Anita, and Read the Footnotes ($6.20) in the Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park.

Bear Fan and Trieste's Honor were favored.

Saturday was the third Saturday the bet has been offered.

The first Magna 5 on Jan. 31 paid $13,928.40 but handled only $460,400. On Feb. 7, the bet returned $5,323.20 on a pool of $505,033.

The bet will be offered on a weekly basis.
