Magna 5 pays $97,500

A $79.20 upset win by Interpatation in the Palm Beach Stakes on Saturday at Gulfstream Park resulted in the second-largest Magna 5 payout of the year, with four tickets each receiving $97,500. The record payoff this year was $406,985.80 to one ticket on Jan. 29.

The Magna 5 links five races at Magna Entertainment tracks, and are run within one hour. The pool is guaranteed to be $500,000. Saturday's pool was $437,349.92, which marked the third time in nine weeks that the guarantee had not been met. Next week's Magna 5, which includes the Florida Derby card at Gulfstream, will be the last one of the year.

Interpatation closed furiously in the final furlong and got up in the last jump to beat the 4-5 favorite, Tadreeb, in the third leg of the wager, the 10th race at Gulfstream Park.

There nearly was a huge upset in the first leg of the Magna 5, the Private Terms Stakes, the ninth at Laurel. Hello Jerry, a 50-1 shot, led until deep stretch, but Malibu Moonshine ($8.60) caught him in the final yards.

Military Singer ($6.60), the favorite, captured the second leg, the fourth race at Santa Anita, a $16,000 claiming race.

After Interpatation's surprise win, Summer Bay ($14.60) scored a mild upset in the fourth leg, the fifth at Santa Anita, a sprint for maiden-claimers.

Fortunate Buy ($7.20) won the final leg, the 11th at Gulfstream, prevailing in a three-horse photo. He was the second choice in the claiming race.
