Magna 5 pays $80,836

ARCADIA, Calif. - An upset win by Castledale at odds of 30-1 in the Santa Anita Derby led to a massive payoff of $80,836.60 for six ticketholders in Saturday's Magna 5. The return was the second highest payoff in the bet's brief history.

The $2 wager requires bettors to find the winners of five races run throughout the country. Until Castledale's surprise victory, there were no longshot winners in Saturday's Magna 5, but only one winning favorite.

The other winners were Implicit ($9) in the first leg from Pimlico, Pollard's Vision ($5.40) in the Illinois Derby from Hawthorne, Kaufy Mate ($11.80) in the Aventura Stakes at Gulfstream Park, and Mariquita's Secret ($9.80) in the fourth leg from Gulfstream Park.

Pollard's Vision was favored. Implicit and Mariquita's Secret were the second choices.

The payoff was the highest since two tickets were worth a record $205,703 on Feb. 28.

Saturday's pool was a record $621,821, far above the $500,000 guaranteed by Magna Entertainment.

Santa Anita offered a $1 million guaranteed pick six pool on Saturday, but the pool reached only $967,122. An insurance policy provided the difference. Saturday's pick six returned $31,041.

When both the Magna 5 and the $1 million guaranteed pool were offered for the first time on the Santa Anita Handicap program on March 6, both bets exceeded the guaranteed pools.
