Magna 5 pays $6,842 for $2

The Magna 5 on Saturday returned $6,842 to 57 winning tickets, a day when an upset win by Brass Hat in the Grade 1 Donn Handicap at Gulfstream Park made the bet difficult to hit.

The $2 bet links five races at tracks owned by Magna Entertainment. On Saturday, the five races were run in less than an hour.

The Magna 5 winners were Sweetnorthernsaint ($2.60) in the Miracle Wood Stakes at Laurel; Barbaro ($5.20) in the Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream Park; Dee's a Legend ($10.60) in a maiden claimer at Santa Anita, Brass Hat ($18.60) in the Donn Handicap at Gulfstream, and Harriett Lane ($7.80) in an allowance race at Santa Anita.

Brass Hat was the second-longest shot in the Donn field. Sweetnorthernsaint and Barbaro were favored, while Harriett Lane was the second choice.

Handle on the bet was $479,784, falling short of Magna's guarantee of a $500,000 pool. The company made up the difference.

On Jan. 28, the first week the Magna 5 was offered this year, the bet paid $6,792.20 and had a pool of $605,218.
