Magna 5 pays $18,513

ARCADIA, Calif. - A shock winner at Golden Gate Fields resulted in a payoff of $18,513.60 to 25 ticket-holders in Saturday's Magna 5.

Three of the five races were won by favorites, but Noble Masterpiece was the surprise, returning $121.60 when he won the fifth race at Golden Gate Fields, a claiming race on turf. The Golden Gate race was the fourth race in the five-race sequence.

The other winners were Robynthegold ($4.20) in the ninth race at Laurel, the first leg; Dedication ($4.40) in the Marshua's River Stakes at Gulfstream, the second leg; Fabulous Groom ($7.40) in fifth race at Santa Anita, the third leg; and Big Out ($5.80) in the last leg, the 12th race at Gulfstream.

The $2 wager requires bettors to pick the winners of five races run at tracks owned by Magna Entertainment. The bet is offered on a weekly basis with the races run within an hour.

Saturday's handle reached $593,389, the third highest in the seven-week history of the bet, but $21,657 less than last week's record figure of $615,046.

Magna has guaranteed the pool will be at least $500,000, and the handle has fallen below that mark only once, the first time bet was offered on Jan. 31.
