Magical Fantasy scores in Oaks

All Magical Fantasy needed was a quiet race in Saturday’s $350,000 Del Mar Oaks.

Fitted with earmuffs for the first time, Magical Fantasy ($87) rallied from ninth to win her first stakes in the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks. Trainer Paddy Gallagher said the use of earmuffs was designed to calm Magical Fantasy, who was winless in three previous starts this year.

“We tried something a little different,” he said. “We thought that would help her relax.”

Magical Fantasy was Gallagher’s first Grade 1 win. She was the highest-priced winner in Del Mar Oaks history.

Ridden by Alex Solis, Magical Fantasy ran 1 1/8 miles on turf in 1:46.34. She was still eighth on the final turn, and closed well on the inside through the stretch to win by two lengths over Bel Air Sizzle.

“I had a good pace in front of me,” Solis said. “I found room in the stretch and she got it done.”

Bel Air Sizzle finished a half-length in front of Lethal Heat. Barry Abrams trains Bel Air Sizzle and Lethal Heat. Satan’s Circus, the 8-5 favorite finished fourth in the field of 10. Oceane Music, previously unbeaten in three starts in France, finished eighth, and was vanned off. She was off in her left foreleg, according to track stewards.

Magical Fantasy, by Diesis, has won 2 of 9 starts and $244,431. She is owned by David Bienstock, Paul Mandabach, and Chuck Winner.

A maiden race winner in England last year, Magical Fantasy was second in the Grade 3 Senorita Stakes in her debut in May but was unplaced in the Grade 2 Honeymoon Handicap and Grade 1 American Oaks.
