Magic Weisner does it right in Ohio

Email

NORTH RANDALL, Ohio - Owner-trainer Nancy H. Alberts' strategy worked to the letter in Saturday's $300,000, Grade 2 . Magic Weisner, trained by Alberts, prompted the pacesetting Wiseman's Ferry all the way - never letting him open up more than a two-length advantage - then dug in gamely under Richard Migliore to win the nine-furlong race by a neck.

It was 1 1/2 lengths back from Wiseman's Ferry to third-place finisher The Judge Sez Who, who was three-quarters of a length in front of Peekskill. Only 2 1/2 lengths separated the competitive four-horse field.

Alberts had said she did not want Wiseman's Ferry to get away from her horse, and Migliore followed her instructions perfectly, keeping Magic Weisner right behind Wiseman's Ferry while racing along the rail. Turning for home, Migliore opted to come around Wiseman's Ferry, rather than stay to the inside, but Wiseman's Ferry drifted out despite vigorous right-handed whipping by Jorge Chavez, carrying Magic Weisner with him. The two battled to the wire with Magic Weisner getting up by a neck.

Magic Weisner was timed in 1:49.96 over a fast track and returned $4.80 as the second choice behind Wiseman's Ferry.

De Bartolo: Ashwood C C all the way

Ashwood C C regained the form that earned her Ohio-bred female champion honors last year and powered to a front-running victory in the $75,000 Rose DeBartolo Memorial Stakes.

Ashwood C C broke in full stride under Scott Saito and led every step of the way en route to a 1 1/4-length win over her five Ohio-bred rivals in the 1 1/8-mile DeBartolo. Lady Cherie rallied steadily from just off the pace to be second, three-quarters of a length quicker than Crypto Cream.

Ashwood C C, owned by Ashwood Thoroughbreds Inc. and trained by Rodrigo Madrigal Sr., was timed in in 1:53.36 and returned $8.60.

Isi Newborn: Secret Romeo romps

Favored Secret Romeo rushed into contention rapidly along the rail on the turn and then drew off in hand to post a 5 1/2-length win in the $35,000 Isi Newborn Memorial Stakes. He then had to survive a claim of foul lodged by rider Ricardo Feliciano, who finished second on Tour the Hive.

Waist Gunner John put on a strong stretch rally from far back to be third.

Secret Romeo is owned by the ACC Stable, trained by Gerald Bennett, and was ridden by Terry Houghton. He covered the six furlongs in a crisp 1:09.84 and paid $3.20.
