'Magic' closes meet in style

Email

CALGARY, Alberta - Kaylee's Magic, champion of her division and Alberta's horse of the year in 2005, makes just her second start of the year in a field of six 3-year-old fillies in the Penny Ridge here at Stampede Park Sunday. The Penny Ridge boasts a $75,000 purse, up $25,000 from 2005, and goes at a mile, a sixteenth of a mile shorter than previous editions.

The Penny Ridge runs as the seventh race on the closing day of this 47-day meeting.

Kaylee's Magic was scratched from the May 28 Lilac after her connections opted not to run her over the sloppy racing surface. An Alberta-bred, Kaylee's Magic opened her season in style by capturing the Mount Royal at six furlongs on May 7 and she has had three five-furlong works in the interim.

Stephan Heiler is back aboard Kaylee's Magic, who is the 119-pound co-highweight and will use her excellent positional speed from post 2.

Mia Cat Dancer, a 14-length winner of the one-mile Lilac, also will carry 119 pounds and will again be ridden by Desmond Bryan. A Kentucky-bred, Mia Cat Dancer obviously appreciated the sloppy surface last time out.

Mia Cat Dancer drew the rail for Sunday and is one of two entrants, along with Awesome Deal, who are trained by Ernie Keller.

Awesome Deal did not take to the course the way Mia Cat Dancer did in the Lilac, but rallied only to lose the photo for place.
