Madrigal trains 1,000th winner

Trainer Rodrigo Madrigal Sr. recorded his 1,000th career victory when he sent Astonishing out in the third race Friday at Thistledown. Astonishing was ridden by Huber Villa Gomez.

Madrigal, a 69-year-old native of Mexico City, began his racing career as a jockey in the 1950s and was also a jockey agent and full-time bullfighter through the 1960s. He lodged his first victory as a trainer with Reggie's Winner at Thistledown in 1979. He is the father of jockey Rodrigo Madrigal Jr. who has been a top rider at Philadelphia for the past 10, years and local trainer Raquel Castro.
