Madeline Auerbach appointed to California Horse Racing Board

ARCADIA, Calif. – Madeline Auerbach, a prominent Thoroughbred owner and breeder, has been appointed to the California Horse Racing Board, according to a statement from California Gov. Jerry Brown released Thursday by the racing board.

In addition, Bown has reappointed Bo Derek to a second-term. Derek began serving on the board in 2008.

Auerbach, 69, owns the California-based stallion Unusual Heat and has an active stable in Southern California. She is part of the board of directors of the Thoroughbred Owners of California, but said Friday that she will resign that position later this month before the racing board’s scheduled meeting at Santa Anita on Jan. 16.

Auerbach said she will continue as the chair of the California Retirement Management Account, which helps to find homes for retired racehorses. She replaces outgoing racing board chairman David Israel, whose term expires Monday.

Derek was named first vice-chair at the racing board’s meeting in December. Chuck Winner will serve as chairman of the racing board beginning this month.
