Macias finds his niche on grass

Macias may have found a home on turf with a victory in his debut on that surface in Monday's $72,150 Eddie Logan Stakes.

Macias ($7.40) ran a mile on turf in 1:35.11, finishing three-quarters of a length in front of Alfarabi, the 3-2 favorite who rallied from last in the field of eight.

Trainer Bob Baffert worked Macias on turf in October but never found a suitable race for the colt, by Purge. With a strong group of 3-year-olds in his stable, Baffert is hoping that Macias can excel on turf.

"I've been trying to separate them and we've got one for the turf," he said. "He's fast, but he's better going two turns."

Owned by Zayat Stables, Macias has won 3 of 5 starts and $117,117. He won the Jack Goodman Stakes over six furlongs on the main track in October in his stakes debut.
