Mac N Mayo scores in Malvern Rose; Whistle Pig sets track record

Mac N Mayo was kept just off the early pace by Scott Spieth and rallied to get up in time in the $74,250 Malvern Rose for fillies and mares at Presque Isle Thursday evening. Trained by Mike Rogers, Mac N Mayo bested the field of six by a half-length in a final time of 1.16.91 for the 6 1/2-furlong Malvern Rose. Jet Away Jane finished second under Angel Rodriquez, 1 1/4 lengths in front of Speechifying. Speechifying, under Jeremy Rose, was sent off as the 8-5 favorite and led to upper stretch before yielding late to the top two. Mac N Mayo returned $7.40

Whistle Pig established a track record in the $76,250 Presidentialaffair a race later at Presque Isle. Taking advantage of a torrid early pace, jockey Edwin King had Whistle Pig back early in the 6 1/2-furlong event. Whistle Pig, trained by Andrew Carter, responded when asked in upper stretch and wore down the leaders to get up in time to win by a head. Night Stand, under Rodrigo Madrigal Jr., had led by as many as three lengths in the stretch, but was collared by Whistle Pig at the wire. Sonivida Red was third, five lengths behind Night Stand. The track record for 6 1/2 furlongs is now 1.15.04. Whistle Pig returned $7.80 to win.
