Ma Femme makes bid to repeat

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - It's been a long drought for Ma Femme, who hasn't visited the winner's circle since the 2003 Perfect Arc at Aqueduct.

Ma Femme's trainer, John Hertler, is hoping the mare can snap her losing streak in Sunday's $100,000 Perfect Arc. Ten fillies and mares, all sired by New York stallions, drew into the main body of the mile turf race.

Last year, won the Perfect Arc by 2 1/4 lengths over Board Elligible, who is entered to run in the Perfect Arc if it is run on the dirt.

Since last year's Perfect Arc, Ma Femme has lost seven starts. Ma Femme's best race this year came in an optional claimer, where she finished a well-beaten second behind Delta Sensation, who won a minor stakes at Belmont in May.

Hertler also liked Ma Femme's effort against open company in September at Belmont. Ma Femme, a daughter of Husband, was sixth, beaten 4 1/2 lengths by Alchemist, a solid allowance competitor.

There is one thing for certain about Ma Femme: She will be on the lead in the Perfect Arc. In last year's Perfect Arc, Ma Femme spurted to a five-length advantage soon after the gates opened.

"It never works when you try to take her off the lead," Hertler said. "She will fight you and take you to the outside fence."

, a New York-bred champion, is the class of the field. The question is whether Beautiful America is as effective on the turf as she is on the dirt. Trained by Mike Hernandez, Beautiful America is 0 for 4 in grass races. She did run second to Ocean Drive, an open stakes winner, in a minor stakes at Belmont last year.

The last time Beautiful America ran on turf, she finished sixth in a division of the restricted Mount Vernon at Belmont in June.

Beautiful America, who is coupled with Cat's Roar, is coming off a second-place to Sugar Punch in the Iroquois at Belmont on Oct. 23.

Hernandez also will run Expect Nothing, who is not coupled in the wagering with Beautiful America and Cat's Roar. Expect Nothing's grass form is quite good and she should offer betting value.
