Mike Luzzi underwent surgery for a broken leg and pelvis on Monday.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Jockey Mike Luzzi, who suffered a broken leg and pelvis in a paddock accident Sunday, was to be transferred Wednesday afternoon to North Shore University Hospital after undergoing surgery earlier in the week at Jamaica Hospital in New York.

On Monday, Luzzi had a rod and screws inserted into his leg and had his pelvis “pinned together,” according to his wife, Tania.

“I’d say he’s a critical patient but a stable one,” Tania Luzzi said Wednesday. “It was a very serious injury.”

The Luzzis were hoping that Mike could have undergone the surgery at Manhattan’s Hospital for Special Surgery, but because he had internal bleeding, he was not stable enough to be moved, Tania Luzzi said.

Tania Luzzi said her husband would be evaluated by doctors at North Shore to determine how long he must remain hospitalized.

This might be a great time to retire and start a new venture. You are patient, kind and communicate with the horses, so why not train the next Derby winner? I will work for you as a groom, have experience with travel. lol Seriously, you get well and take all of the time you need. Maybe do some network TV handicapping while recuperating. Tania take care of that guy! See ya at Saratoga!!!

It's not inconceivable that Mike could turn to training at some point. He is a lifetime horseman and the grandson of Virgil "Buddy" Raines the great Delaware Park trainer who defeated Jaipur and Ridan with his horse Greek Money in the 1962 Preakness. (which is available on YouTube btw) Good luck Mike and get well soon.

I'm trying to '"respect" what you have to say & granted I do not know exactly who are..... but when this story was written, it was not exactly the best time to interject your opinion.... what ever my brother choses to do I know he will be great at...... like he always have been!!! At this time, we ask for prayers & support in whatever HE chooses to do....

Mike, best of luck in your recovery. Hopefully you will be back for Monmouth park meet, PS, take the plunge there, it's better than riding 45 to 1 shots at the big A and Bel.
