Lush Lashes wins, sets mark

Lush Lashes proved herself one of the most versatile fillies in training on Friday when she set a Newmarket July Course course record for 1 1/2 miles winning the Group 1, $309,000 Yorkshire Oaks, a race transplanted from York after this week's Ebor meeting had been washed out.

Coming from last to first under Kevin Manning, the even-money Lush Lashes defeated Dar Re Mi by 1 1/4 lengths. Lush Lashes traveled the distance on good to firm ground in 2:25.11, shaving .09 of a second off Craigsteel's 1999 track mark. A 3-year-old daughter of Galileo, Lush Lashes had previously won the one-mile Group 1 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot and was an extremely unlucky head second to Halfway to Heaven in Goodwood's 1 1/4-mile Group 1 Nassau Stakes.

On the same card, the 12-1 Borderlescott upset the $309,000 Nunthorpe Stakes with a half-length victory over South African sprint champ National Colour, speeding the five furlongs in a track-record 56.09, or 1.09 seconds off the old mark, and giving 40-year training veteran Robin Bastiman his first Group 1 success.
