'Lucky Kiss' back with females

PORTLAND, Ore. - Our Lucky Kiss, fresh off a strong second against males in the Nov. 2 OTBA Sales Stakes, is the one to beat in Saturday's $14,980 Janet Wineberg Stakes for Oregon-bred 2-year-old fillies.

Our Lucky Kiss, a daughter of Swiss Yodeler who races for Howard Seigel, will face only five rivals, including a stable coupling, in the six-furlong Janet Wineberg.

Our Lucky Kiss made her first 10 starts in California, culminating in a maiden victory over $12,500 company at Fresno

Oct. 13. She shipped here for the OTBA Sales Stakes, and closed strongly under Karen Knapp to finish within two lengths of the heavy favorite, Right You Are.

Our Lucky Kiss should get her stiffest competition from Slew Falls, who finished fourth, beaten 10 lengths, in the OTBA Sales Stakes after winning her debut against $10,000 maidens on opening weekend. Slew Falls, who races for Pat Cosgrove and trainer Roger Stevenson, will race coupled in the wagering with the Roger Stevenson-trained Crowning Reality.

Pat Sonnen remembered

Saturday's sixth race will honor the memory of owner and trainer Pat Sonnen, who died shortly before this meeting began on Oct. 19. Sonnen raced horses at Portland Meadows for many years under the banner of Rapids and Associates, then began training his own horses in 1999 and ranked among the leading trainers for each of the last three seasons.

As part of the tribute to Sonnen, Slews Onry Won will be paraded before the stands. Slews Onry Won was among Sonnen's best horses.
