Lucky Kelly eyes first victory

EDMONTON, Alberta - Lucky Kelly, who has been second in her last three starts and in four of her last five, will be looking for her first career victory in Sunday's allowance feature for fillies and mares.

Sam Shirley will ride Lucky Kelly for trainer Tom Dewey in the 6 1/2-furlong allowance sprint for non-winners of two, which has drawn seven entrants.

Lucky Kelly has been running with a $15,000 claiming tag, but that applies to much of the field.

Slewperwoman was a close second behind Kiss for Cody in her latest. She will be ridden by Leanne Painter in her fifth lifetime outing, the first of which she won at Assiniboia Downs in a maiden special weight affair.

Also coming off a runner-up finish, albeit in an allowance, is Gypsy Breeze, ridden by Quincy Welch. The Florida-bred has been no worse than fourth in seven starts this year.

Carline, with Richard Hamel up, will be making her fourth start of the year after winning her opener in a maiden special at Sunday's distance. In her latest, Carline yielded the lead in the stretch going a mile in an allowance and wound up third.

A 4-year-old trained by Delbert Rycroft for her breeders Mike and Linda Oslanski, Carline raced last year at Woodbine in maiden claimers and finished second for $25,000 and $20,000.

Jewel Queen finished fourth in the Mount Royal immediately after winning a maiden special weight.
