Louisiana Downs: Class relief for Amanecer de Oro

Tom Keyser
Amanecer de Oro is 4 for 8 on the main track at Louisiana Downs.

Amanecer de Oro, last seen chasing the pace in the Grade 3 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap at Oaklawn Park last month before coming up empty in the drive, returns to his favorite oval Saturday, as he leads a quality group of allowance sprinters in the featured race at Louisiana Downs.

The six-furlong race drew a field of seven and carries a $25,000 purse, with another $5,000 available to accredited Louisiana-breds.

A four-time winner locally, including the Louisiana Cup Sprint last August in his last start here, Amanecer de Oro has raced at three different tracks since. The 5-year-old son of Afternoon Deelites is trained by Steve Duke and will be ridden by Richard Eramia.

Solar Charge, the winner of the Bucharest Stakes over the Sam Houston turf in February, comes off a solid second in the Route 66 Stakes at Will Rogers Downs. The consistent Danny Pish trainee has finished no worse than fourth in his last 10 starts. He will be ridden by Don Simington.

Stakes veteran Tortuga Straits, a winner of almost $808,473 in his long career, will be making his second start of the year. The 9-year-old turned in an even effort at Oaklawn Park in February against middle-level claiming company before going back on the shelf. He finished a solid second behind Amanecer de Oro in the Louisiana Cup Sprint in his final start in 2012 and also is a four-time winner over the Louisiana Downs main track. Trainer Ralph Irwin will give veteran reinsman Bobby Walker Jr. a leg up.
