Louisiana Downs has made some changes to its wagering format for its 46-date Quarter Horse meet that opens Saturday. The Bossier City, La., track will race through March 27.
Louisiana Downs will card pick threes on all races this meet, said Trent McIntosh, director of racing operations for the track. McIntosh also said the minimum number of starters required for superfectas has been reduced from eight to six, and for trifectas, from six to five.
Highlights of the meet include the Mardi Gras Derby and Mardi Gras Futurity on March 16, and the Harrah’s Futurity on March 23. McIntosh said purses are projected to average about $80,000 a day. He said the track also has added a maiden stakes to its calendar for 2013.
The opening nine-race card Saturday features two stakes at diverse distances. The $15,000 Marathon will be run over 870 yards, and the $15,000 Harrah’s Dash goes at 250 yards. Louisiana Downs will race every Saturday through Tuesday and also will have special Wednesday cards on March 20 and March 27. First post daily is 1 p.m. Central.

HOLY ACADEMY displayed respectable grass form last spring, before performing well on the Poly. She's stretching out off a third behind a runner-up who came back to finish second in the Ballade Stakes, and could be dangerous as the controlling speed in this optional claimer. QUEEN OF THE WAVES rallied wide from mid-pack to beat N1X allowance stock following a layoff when she last saw action March 29 at the Fair Grounds. She can obviously fire while fresh, and should be prominent under Da Silva, who broke her maiden.
