Lost at Sea upsets Iowa Oaks

ALTOONA, Iowa - Lost at Sea parlayed a perfect stalking trip under this meet's leading rider Terry Thompson into an upset victory over previously undefeated See How She Runs in the Wednesday evening's $150,000 Iowa Oaks at Prairie Meadows.

Thompson settled Lost at Sea ($46) in third along the rail just behind See How She Runs and pacesetting Never Out through a half-mile run in 46.44 seconds. Thompson eased Lost at Sea off the fence approaching the second turn as jockey Don Pettinger moved See How She Runs up to challenge for the lead entering the far turn.

See How She Runs took a narrow advantage approaching the stretch and fought on willingly while maintaining a short lead through most of the stretch run, but Lost at Sea responded to strong right-handed pressure and surged in the final strides to prevail by a head.

Lost at Sea covered the 1 1/16-mile distance in stakes-record time of 1:42.27. See How She Runs was eight lengths clear of third-place finisher Don't Ruffle Me. Charmed Gift, who surprisingly was sent off as the narrow public betting choice at even money (See How She Runs was 6-5), raced within striking range to the second turn but never mounted a bid under jockey Robby Albarado and finished a distant fourth in the six-horse field.

The victory was Lost at Sea's second stakes win and her fourth victory overall from 10 starts for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. The $90,000 winner's share of the Iowa Oaks purse nearly doubled her career earnings to more than $183,000. Lost at Sea is co-owned by Hollendorfer, her breeder John Franks, and Peter Abruzzo.

* Favored Adopted Daughter ($4.60) rallied strongly along the rail to score a 1 1/4-length victory over pacesetter Goldleafed Mirror in Wednesday's co-featured Prairie Gold Lassie Stakes for 2-year-old-fillies at five furlongs. Jockey Mark Guidry guided the Ronnie Werner-trained Adopted Daughter to victory. She covered the distance in 57.49 seconds and is now 2 for 2 in her young career for owners Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey.
