Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity winner I Like the Odds euthanized

I Like the Odds, upset winner of the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity for Quarter Horses on Dec. 11, was euthanized Friday after suffering from laminitis in recent weeks, Los Alamitos announced in a statement Sunday.

The laminitis is believed to have been an after effect of a spider bite sustained in the days after the victory in the Los Alamitos Two Million, according to co-owner Kim Kessinger. I Like the Odds was being treated at San Luis Rey Equine Clinic in San Diego County when he was euthanized.

Kessinger said veterinarians Joe Cannon at San Luis Rey and Rick Overly at Los Alamitos speculated that the bite, below the knee on the gelding’s right foreleg, led to laminitis.

“The leg blew up,” Kessinger said. “Finally, it broke and then it just kept deteriorating from that point on. He eventually got laminitis on both [front] feet.”

Trained by Joe Bassett, I Like the Odds was co-owned by Tom Bradbury and Howard Nichols. I Like the Odds won 3 of 7 starts and $911,606.
