Hez Our Secret, Senor Toby and Jess You and I earned berths to the $750,000 Champion of Champions on Dec. 15 by sweeping the top three positions in Saturday’s Z. Wayne Griffin Director’s Trial at Los Alamitos.
Saturday’s lone trial was the last chance to earn a berth into the Champion of Champions, the nation’s most prestigious race for older Quarter Horses.
Hez Our Secret, second in the All American Derby at Ruidoso Downs in September and the Los Alamitos Super Derby earlier this month, won the 400-yard trial race by three-quarters of a length over Senor Toby in 19.60 seconds. Hez Our Secret races for Johnny Trotter and is trained by Trey Wood.
Senor Toby finished a half-length in front of Jess You and I. Creston Goer, the 5-2 favorite in the trial, was off slowly and finished seventh in a field of eight.
Jess You and I, an 8-year-old gelding, will be making a record-equaling fifth consecutive appearance in the Champion of Champions, a race he won in 2008. Refrigerator ran in five Champion of Champions, winning the race three times.
The three qualifiers from Saturday’s trial join the 2012 major stakes winners Charal Kid, Chivalry Sr, Cold Cash 123, Deniro El Aguila Real, Flame N Flash, and Rylees Boy in the 10-runner Champion of Champions, which is run over 440 yards.
If one of the qualifiers defects from the race, Thisfeatureisspecial, fourth in Saturday’s trial, becomes the first alternate.
Best Bets
OUR HEAT has a win and a second in two turf tries here. She has been favored both time but is meeting tougher today. Like her style, sitting back a bit early and then unleashing a strong closing kick. She seems to like the turf and graduated in a straight maiden grass race. The breeding is heavily slanted to turf. BEEZAROO has hit the board in her past five starts at this level. Has outrun her breeding on turf and scored her lone career victory over the Lakeside Turf Course. Rider chose top pick over her, but she's picked up leading ridder for this.
