Los Alamitos: Flame N Flash draws rail for La Primera del Ano Derby

A rail draw for a major Quarter Horse race would spook some trainers. Juan Aleman considers Flame N Flash to be at an advantage from the inside post in Friday’s $214,300 La Primera Del Ano Derby at Los Alamitos.

Flame N Flash will be after her first major stakes win in the Grade 2 La Primera Del Ano Derby, which is run over 400 yards.

“I kind of like the 1 hole with her,” Aleman said. “She kind of drifts inward, and maybe it will keep her straight. I’m not too disappointed with that post position.”

Flame N Flash is part of a field of 10 3-year-old fillies in the La Primera Del Ano Derby. The field includes fastest qualifier This Boogie Fires, who was third in the Kindergarten Futurity last May; A First Down Snow, who won the minor Dixie Futurity in Utah last year; and Sex on Fire, who was fifth in the Ed Burke Million Futurity last June.

Aleman said that This Boogie Fires “is the one to beat.” Trained by Jaime Gomez, This Boogie Fires ran 400 yards in 19.78 seconds in a time trial for the La Primera Del Ano Derby on March 17. Flame N Flash won her division of the trials in 19.89 seconds under jockey Francisco Rubio, who has the mount on Friday.

Flame N Flash was not fully extended in the trial, leaving Aleman hopeful that she can duplicate the effort. “Hopefully, we have something to come back with” in the final, Aleman said.

Owned by Robert Williams, Flame N Flash, by Walk Thru Fire, has won 4 of 10 starts and $83,720. She was eighth in the Ed Burke Million Futurity last June and ended the year with a win in the Los Alamitos Juvenile Stakes in December, a consolation race for the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity.

Earlier this year, Flame N Flash was fourth, beaten a neck, by Kobe in the Los Alamitos Winter Derby. Kobe is a top contender in Saturday’s El Primero Del Ano Derby.

“She’s been facing tougher horses,” Aleman said. “Back in the Winter Derby, she faced those tough geldings and she only lost by a neck for the whole thing.

“Her main thing is to get away clean. She’s not the best away from there. She needs a mistake-free
