Los Alamitos: Five Bar Cartel by a nose in Ed Burke Million Futurity

CYPRESS, Calif. – Five Bar Cartel remained unbeaten after three starts with a nose victory in Sunday’s $1,111,000 Ed Burke Million Futurity at Los Alamitos.

The Burke is the first of three seven-figure futurities in the Los Alamitos Bonanza. The next race in the series is the Golden State Million in November. Five Bar Cartel’s next start will be in the trials for that race, according to trainer Danny Montes.

Five Bar Cartel ($18.60) ran 350 yards in 17.52 seconds, catching early leader Unchangeable in the final stride to win by a nose. Five Bar Cartel was ridden by Saul Ramirez Jr.

Masherati B finished third in the field of 10.

Five Bar Cartel earned $449,820 for Sunday’s win. The Burke is the biggest career win for Montes, who has horses at Los Alamitos and at Les Bois Park in Boise, Idaho.

The victory gave owner Jorge Carmona of Riverside, Calif., his second consecutive win in the Burke. Last year, Carmona owned race winner One Dashing Eagle in partnership. One Dashing Eagle later won the All American and Golden State Million futurities and was named the 2012 World Champion Running Quarter Horse.

One Dashing Eagle currently is at stud in Oklahoma.
