Los Alamitos: Docs Apollo takes Golden State Derby

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. - Docs Apollo won the first stakes of his career in Sunday's $238,250 Golden State Derby for Quarter Horses at Los Alamitos.

Ridden by Alejandro Luna, Docs Apollo ($10.60) broke from the outside in a field of eight, led throughout and won by three-quarters of a length over 6-1 Pushing Dazies. Significant Cartel finished third, a head in front of 9-10 favorite Filthy Fast.

Docs Apollo, who is by the Thoroughbred horse Apollo, races for the Dutch Masters III partnership and trainer Jaime Gomez. The Grade 1 Golden State Derby was Docs Apollo's second win in eight starts, and improved his earnings to $128,914. Last year, Docs Apollo was ninth as a 53-1 outsider in the Golden State Million Futurity at Los Alamitos, his only other stakes appearance.
