Los Alamitos Derby tops fair meet stakes schedule

Los Alamitos has scheduled five stakes for its 12-day Los Angeles County Fair meeting, which runs from Sept. 8-25, led by the $200,000 Los Alamitos Derby on Sept. 24.

The Los Alamitos Derby was run in July in 2014 and 2015. This year, the track ran a three-week meeting in April and does not have a July meeting.

The Grade 2 Los Alamitos Derby is run at 1 1/8 miles and could produce a runner for the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic on Nov. 5 at Santa Anita.

There are two $100,000 stakes at Los Alamitos in September at 6 1/2 furlongs for 2-year-olds offered at a Barretts sale – the Barretts Juvenile for colts and geldings on Sept. 17 and the Barretts Debutante for fillies a day later.

The first Saturday of the meeting, Sept. 10, has two $75,000 stakes – the Beverly Lewis Stakes for 3-year-old filly sprinters and the E.B. Johnston Stakes for California-bred milers.

There are no graded stakes for 3-year-olds on dirt in Southern California between Saturday’s $100,000 Affirmed Stakes at Santa Anita and the Los Alamitos Derby. Del Mar has two graded stakes for 3-year-olds on turf and the $100,000 Shared Belief Stakes for 3-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles on dirt Aug. 26.
