HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Saving ground is often the route to victory on turf, but since Lori’s Store prefers to race outside, trainer Marty Wolfson was more than happy for her to stay there during the $150,000 Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf on Saturday at Gulfstream Park.

Jockey John Velazquez obliged, and in turn, so did Lori’s Store, who raced four paths wide on the final turn yet kept on motoring to capture the race over stablemate E B Ryder, who again settled for second for the fifth time in her last six starts.

“They both like the outside,” Wolfson said in the winner’s circle.

Lori’s Store won by a half-length, with E B Ryder second by a half-length over Pink Poppy, who won this race last year when trained by Wolfson.

Unbridled Courage was fourth and was followed in order by Comet Sixty Two and Naval Command.

Daddy’s Boo was scratched earlier in the day.

Lori’s Store completed 1 1/16 miles on firm turf in 1:45.93 following a dawdling early pace of 1:14.95 for the first six furlongs. Curiously, Pink Poppy was taken well off that slow pace after being on or near the lead in recent starts. She is winless in nine starts since her victory in this race last year.

The win was the seventh in 27 starts for Lori’s Store, a daughter of El Prado who, like E B Ryder, is a 6-year-old mare owned by Miller Racing Inc. Wolfson said he was unsure if both would remain in training this year or head to the breeding shed.
