Lord Robyn in shaky spot

MIAMI - Will a return to his favorite course be enough to help Lord Robyn snap a three-race losing streak in Saturday's $75,000 Simply Majestic Handicap at Calder?

Chances are the betting public will think so and establish Lord Robyn, who is perfect in three starts over the Calder turf, as the favorite against 10 other 3-year-olds in the 1 1/16-mile Simply Majestic. With plenty of speed in the field, though, and some questions about Lord Robyn's form, he could be vulnerable in his first local appearance since he dominated the Tropical Park Derby here on New Year's Day.

A Grade 3 stakes winner, Lord Robyn capped a three-race win streak with a 4 1/2-length triumph in the 1 1/8-mile Tropical Park Derby. He has failed to reproduce that effort in three subsequent starts, however, finishing fifth in Gulfstream Park's Dave Feldman, fourth when failing to show his usual speed in the Sophomore Turf Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs, and sixth in the Forerunner Stakes at Keeneland on April 21.

Trainer Dave Fawkes has given Lord Robyn a series of sharp works over the local course, including a pair of sub-59 five-furlong drills, an indication Lord Robyn will revert to his favorite tactic and attempt to steal the Simply Majestic on the front end under jockey Eddie Castro.

could receive a healthy challenge for the lead from Dream On Dream On, who won a first-level allowance in wire-to-wire fashion here April 25; the multiple stakes-placed Favre, who will be making his turf debut; and Nicandro, the gate-to-wire winner of the Sophomore Turf.

If the pace gets too hot, look for Turk's Ransom, Talented Prince, and Starship Zim to pick up the pieces. All three figure to offer some value on the tote board.

registered back-to-back turf victories to close his 2-year-old campaign, including a win in the restricted Arthur Appleton Juvenile Turf. He finished fourth behind Lord Robyn when not receiving any pace help in the Tropical Park Derby.

won a high-priced claiming race over the swift Gulfstream Park turf course in March and exits perhaps his best effort yet, in the Unbridled Stakes, where he rallied from last to finish second behind Hal's Image.

finished second to Lord Robyn on two occasions at 2, but has been victimized by bad luck in several subsequent starts. In his most recent outing, he was forced to take up sharply in early stretch before recovering to finish a game third in an entry-level allowance.
